If you love dairy, traveling in Guatemala can be a bit of a challenge. Unless you’re willing to fork out a fortune, the milk comes in powder form or has that UHT aftertaste, the cheese tastes like the plastic it comes in, and the yogurt is so artificial it doesn’t even need to go in the fridge.

In San Pedro, thankfully, El Artesano has come to the rescue with yogurt that is handmade from real milk and contains nothing but what nature intended. It’s filled with probiotics, which are perfect when you’re trying to nurse an upset stomach. Eat the thick Greek yogurt with fruit or add some to a smoothie. You can also get ready-made tzatziki, which makes for a tasty, healthy snack.

El Artesano yogurt and tzatziki are available at Mini Mercado Johanna’s and sometimes at The Juice Girls, both in the main street left from the Pana dock.
