The top hotel in San Pedro, Lake Atitlan, Guatemala, is Hotel Mikaso, on the waterfront near Seventh Avenue.

Top of the Line Lodging:
Hotel Mikaso at Lake Atitlan

top hotel san pedro lake atitlan mikasoA waterfall of brilliant bougainvillea cascades from the terrace and balconies of Hotel Mikaso, where shiny blue and white ceramic tiles sparkle in the sun at San Pedro's most intriguing place to stay.

The three-level building has spectacular in-your-face views of the three volcanoes and the lake, and Mikaso possesses such Colonial-style charm in such a picturesque setting, that you would not be surprised to see Indiana Jones discussing crystal skulls with a Maya shaman on the rooftop terrace.

Fourteen private rooms and two dorms have high ceilings and ceiling fans, and are distinguished by tile floors, wooden carvings, wrought iron, art and other atmospheric touches that give Mikaso a unique personality. Purified water is available on all floors for guests. Prices for rooms and dorms are far more affordable than before, especially when it's the nicest hotel in town.

New International Menu, Too

Since five months ago when Laurence and Montreal-schooled chef Mikael took over Mikaso, the food is tastier and less expensive. The international menu includes meals such as Chicken with Peanut Sauce, Lomito Parmesan, Shrimp with Herbs and Souvlaki Pitas, as well as Guatemalan dishes, hamburgers, pasta and pizza. And they still serve Paella, a favorite Spanish dish, and Spanish omelets.

With wall-length windows on three sides and a vaulted ceiling, the spacious dining room on the top floor provides a dramatic backdrop by day or night.

Things to Do at Hotel Mikaso

Two new Jacuzzis, both with stunning views, are free for guests, and the one on the roof can be rented. A Cinema Lounge is available for movies, and there’s a pool table, too. Guests can access free WI-FI or play cards or other games in the dining room and on the terrace. There are several spacious terraces with lounge chairs for sunning, and covered seating for sipping a Q60 pitcher of Sangria or a cold beer.

Close to the Santiago dock, Hotel Mikaso is just a few steps from some of the town's top Spanish language schools, La Piscina for swimming or sunbathing, Bubulutzi’s Deli and Movie Lounge, and el Barrio Bar. A well-lit, paved sidewalk leads from the lobby almost all the way to Seventh Avenue.

The jewel of San Pedro lodging, Mikaso is an enchanting place to stay, dine, relax and enjoy your vacation at the lake.
