Hotels at Lake Atitlan: The Hotel Unicornio in San Marcos

The north shore of Lake Atitlan is known for being more tropical than other parts of the lake. San Marcos la Laguna, a ten-minute boat ride from San Pedro or forty minutesfrom Panajachel, is one of the calmest, most relaxing towns on the north shore or anywhere else on the lake.

lodging atitlan hotel unicornioSan Marcos is composed of three barrios, or neighborhoods. The one visitors know best is Barrio 3, where most of the hotels, restaurants and therapy centers (for which San Marcos is renowned) are located.

In the middle of Barrio 3, less than a five minute walk to any destination, is the Hotel Unicornio, which has been a popular destination for over two decades and continues to be one of the least expensive lodgings in San Marcos.

The Unicornio is mostly private bungalow-style cabins for one or two people, though one dorm is available.

Sauna and other Amenities

Three bathrooms, which are kept very clean, a hot shower, a fully equipped kitchen, and a traditional Maya sauna, or temescal, are also on the grounds.

The vibrant gardens are filled with all sorts of fruit trees and flowers, including some favorites of hummingbirds. With the half dozen or so cabins scattered around the grounds, there is plenty of space to relax in a hammock or socialize in the courtyard.

Free Food Daily

A free breakfast of pancakes and bananas only sweetens the deal. The kitchen bustles in the morning as guests prepare their breakfasts and get to know one another. Long-term guests are common, and there is a distinct sense of community among those who stay at the Unicornio.

Managers Shad and Colleen’s interests run far beyond the field of hotel management, which provides guests with more opportunities to learn and explore San Marcos. Several days a week, Shad takes any interested guests to work in the vegetable gardens and learn about permaculture at La Cambalacha, a local non-profit.
Colleen and Shad also make their own wine from fruits found around the lake or at the markets, live vinegars, sourdough, and pickles. Many of these creations are available to guests, and Shad and Colleen are always happy to share their knowledge and enthusiasm.

The hotel does not take reservations, so it is best to show up early for a room. Given the abundance of activities available to guests, combined with the tranquil grounds, the Unicornio is the perfect place to enjoy your visit to Lake Atitlan.
