The Insider's Guide to Lake Atitlan

Lake Atitlan Hotels and Lodging

Hotels and other lodging options around Lake Atitlan range from budget hostels to micro-boutique hotels, luxury resorts and villas.

From as low as $3 for a room with private bath in San Pedro, the rates can go into the hundreds for the top villas and resort-style hotels in Panajachel and around the lake.

San Pedro and San Marcos

Hostels around the lake start at under $3. In San Pedro, you'll discover many great deals on a hotel room with private bath for $5-8. Hotel Mikaso, on the lake, has new low prices for rooms and a dorm, plus a new menu that is far less expensive.

San Marcos is another popular town with budget hostels like Hotel Unicornio, to mid-range hotel rooms, to luxury lodging at Hotel Aaculaax. Like Santa Cruz, San Marcos can be reached only by boat or the road from San Pedro.

In Santiago, the top hotel and restaurant is at Posada de Santiago. Live music on Fridays and Saturdays.

In Santa Cruz, hotels like Hotel Isla Verde, Iguana Perdida, and Villasumaya have good views of the lake and the volcanoes. You can spend $20 and up here. (No restaurants in town except at hotels.) Luxury villas are available in nearby Paxanax.

Hotels in Panajachel

A typical room with private bath will run from $15 and up. Mario's Rooms and Hotel Chaparral, both on Avenida Santander, also have cable TV. Less expensive hostels are also available.

Several mid-range hotels on the same street include Hotel Regis, Hotel Dos Mundos and Hotel Maya. Hotel Atitlan ($140) and Porta Hotel del Lago ($170) boast lakeside locations.

Panajachel has a wide range of budget rooms, hotels and luxury resorts. A mid-range hotel with sauna, lake views and only nine rooms, Posada Los Encuentros in Panajachel is a pleasant ten-minute walk from the center of town.
