Panajachel's Disco Chapiteau
Discos in Panajachel at Lake Atitlan don't get any glitzier than Chapiteau. But now there is more than glitter and glitz: Chapiteau has become an exciting venue for jazz and Latin bands, cabaret acts from the capital and Pana, and a monthly talent show as well as one of the lake's leading discos. It's also the only place at the lake we know of that serves tapas, or light snacks.
At the far end of the long room, a big dance floor provides plenty of room for partying the night away. One bartender juggles bottles and fire torches during the music. The new laser show, smoke and other special effects transform Chapiteau into a surrealistic experience.
There are always special attractions on weekends. Friday is Ladies Night, when ladies get a free tequila as well as free entry. Saturday night concerts include contests with prizes.
In September, Latin night on Thursdays features Q10 Ron Bacardi, Ron Barcelo Anejo and Vodka Schmirnoff. Every night this month, the drink special is Jaegermeisterbull.
Live Acts and Snacks
A large stage offers a dramatic setting for live acts such as cabaret and dance troupes. Some events scheduled for September are the band Zanda la Banda on the 5th, the return of the highly popular Margen de Error dance music group for a concert on the 12th, and the Talent Show on the 26th. Chapiteau is always looking for new performers, and the Talent Show's "open mic" offers a good way to break into show business.
The live performances can also be enjoyed from the large terrace snacking on the many kinds of tapas: in September, look for tasty treats such as tortilla espanola, marinated champignons, marinated olives, smoked fish—and free popcorn.
In the New Zona Viva
Chapiteau is on Calle Arboles in Pana's new zona viva, which is centered at the junction of Principal and Santander. Watch the signs out front for other events and specials, see the club's Facebook.com page, or ask to be added to their e-mail list by writing them at Chapiteau Email List.
Open until 1 AM nightly, Chapiteau should be on your list of "things to do" in Panajachel.
