Lake Atitlan Restaurants: Pana Meats for USA-style Sub Sandwiches
Lunch time at Panajachel Meais where you will find hot and cold submarine sandwiches at one of Panajachel’s most popular lunch spots. They also serve blue plate specials and other meals.
Panajachel Meats, wholesaling USA meats, poultry and restaurant supplies here since 2005, began serving deli-style sandwiches n early 2008. They proved such a hit, the menu was expanded to offer hot sandwiches and blue plate specials like the Roast Pork with Gravy, Sage Stuffing and Mashed Potatoes for Q25.
When I ate there in June, I tried The Cuban. The provolone cheese, warmed up just enough, blended perfectly with the roast pork, ham, mustard and pickle. The bread, custom-made, combines the slight crust of a
French baguette with the softness of Italian bread.
Heated and pressed in the Cuban tradition, this was without a doubt the best sandwich I’ve tasted in
Guatemala. (A San Pedro bar owner said the same thing to me about the Honey Smoked Turkey sandwich a few months ago.)
All meals are take-out, or you can dine outside at a table under a big blue awning. For Q10, Jim will open any bottle of wine you buy there to accompany your meal. Phone in your order to have it ready. They also deliver to homes and hotels.
Blue Plate Specials
These are full meals like Ham Steak with Macaroni and Cheese, and the Angus Pan Steak with Scalloped Potatoes. Blue Plate Specials all go for around $4 US.
For those who like to cook, Pana Meats stocks a wide assortment of meats and poultry imported from the USA. Jim was an executive chef for hotels and country clubs for 20 years and he knows his cuts of meat. They also carry seafood,
pork, hot dogs, turkey and deli-sliced meats and cheeses. Top that off with some of the town’s best prices on wines and spirits, and you’re on the way to cooking up one fine dinner.
Pana Meats is, behind Banco G&T on Calle Principal. Open Tuesday-Saturday from 10 AM-4 PM. Phone: 5391- 4855.
