The Snack Shack in San Marcos

Everything from the bread to the spread is homemade at the Snack Shack, where you can get a filling meal for a budget price. From tasty sandwiches, soup and salad to luscious desserts, the Snack Shack is the place to go in San Marcos. And you won’t have to go far, because it’s in the center of town, across the street from Hotel Unicornio.

Lunch in San Marcos

The sandwiches are made from homemade bread that is thick and has a thin, crunchy crust. Colleen will be happy to toast it the way you like. They make a good lunch to pack when hiking around the area or taking a boat ride.

Meats—smoked turkey, ham, salami and prosciutto—are all from Pana Meats, which has the finest imported meats in Guatemala. And you know the vegetables are fresh, because they’re all grown at the lake.

You can get a sandwich with your choice of three vegetables, one cheese and one spread for only Q25, and it comes with soup or a salad. I had fried zucchini, avocado and spinach with eggplant and caramelized onions. At first I thought I would have to take half of it to go (it’s a big sandwich), but it was so good I finished the whole thing and wound up so stuffed, I couldn’t kill the pasta salad.

Sugar High Desserts

On Thursday through Sunday, the Snack Shack is magically transformed into Sugar High Desserts, serving delightful pastries such as Macadamia Truffles or a sampler plate. Worth the boat ride from San Pedro or Santa Cruz, these desserts give new meaning to the phrase “day trip.”

The Pig and Whistle Pub

A door in the cozy, garden dining area leads into The Pig and Whistle Pub, the town’s newest bar. A chill place to hang out, schmooze with new and old friends, and dine on “pub grub,” the Pig and Whistle has excellent prices on mixed drinks and beer. It’s open Wednesday-Sunday from 5 PM-10 PM.

Even if you are not on a budget, you’ll enjoy a meal and dessert in a friendly, tropical setting at the Snack Shack.
