Lake Atitlan Dining:
Smokin' Joe's BBQ in San Pedro
A San Pedro insitution since 2007, Smokin’ Joes’ BBQ is the place to be on Sundays. Lots of locals show up for the Southern-style grilled steaks, ribs and other entrees, and savvy travelers have made this event world famous.
The new outdoor setting, with covered seating around the big pool and the multi-level layout is more spacious than the original site of the barbeque at The Deep End Bar, originally called La Piscina.
New on the Menu
One secret of Smokin’ Joes’ success is the occasional new entree or side dish. In addition to the huge Pittsburg and Bacon-wrapped steaks, imported Angus Beef is now on the menu. Joes’ own steak sauces, such as the Carolina BBQ Sauce, are available, as it’ the only place in town with Lea & Perrins Worcestire sauce.
The Baby Back Ribs are tender and juicy, and the Flintstone Beef Ribs are so big, you can use the for Filipino Stick Fighting! Fresh fish from the Pacific coast, and sausage are also served, as well as the the Portobello Burger, a big fat mushroom in a bun.
Super-Sized Side Dishes
Mac and Cheese still reigns as king of the side dishes, which are also huge. Others include Potato Salad, Red Beans and Rice, Green Beans and Roasted Potatoes. You get three sides with a meal, or can opt for four sides without an entree. And the great thing is that the side dishes are a serve yourself deal. Dessert consists of a Brownie or a Pineapple or Blackberry Cobbler with Ice Cream.
Giving Something Back to the Community
As great as the food is, there is usually some left at the end of the day. Smokin’ Joes’ donates this to local Maya families, setting an example for other businesses in San Pedro.
Besides San Pedro, Smokin’ Joes’ also sets up shop in Panajachel on Saturdays. This event takes place at Palapa Bar, next to Cafe Atlantis. Both events start at high noon and last until around sunset. But don’t be late, or your favorite side dish may have already disappeared!
Where: Cafe Chuasinayi, on the way to the Santiago Dock
