San Pedro Spanish School at Lake Atitlan, Guatemala
Many students at San Pedro Spanish School say they picked it because it was highly recommended by friends. One of the top Spanish schools in Guatemala, it boasts a friendly and relaxing atmosphere along the shore of Lake Atitlán.
Customized Courses
Founded in 1997, the school offers customized courses with one-on-one lessons at all levels, from beginner to advanced. University credits are certified by the Universidad de Guatemala. (It and all their schools are also recognized by the Ministry of Education and the Guatemalan Tourist Board.)
Interactive lessons enable students to learn how to converse in Spanish in all sorts of situations. The tranquil atmosphere and tropical setting make it easy to focus on learning to speak and write Spanish. Free Wi-Fi is available for students.
A well-trained staff of teachers also takes part in extracurricular activities that make the experience fun as well as educational. Spanish-language films, seminars on Mayan culture and the calendar, salsa lessons and optional weekend excursions are only a few of the many things to do that enable students to put their lessons to practical use and learn even faster.
Home stays are another way to enhance the learning experience, as students can live with a local family that speaks only Spanish. Three daily meals are included. Local hotels are inexpensive, as are the restaurants. In San Marcos, classes are held at Hotel Paco Real, which offers a discount for students.
Helping the Community
San Pedro Spanish School runs the Children of the Lake project, and part of the tuition goes to education, health care and nutrition. They opened a new facility in San Pedro recently (see www.Atitlansol.com and www.ninosdellagosanpedro.org for information).
How Much Does it Cost?
Rates start at less than $100 for four hours daily, five days a week. Major credit cards are accepted. Reservations are recommended, especially during high season. In addition to the main school in San Pedro, they have affiliate schools in San Marcos la Laguna, San Juan and Santiago at the lake. There's also one in Livingstone.
