La Piscina in San Pedro

Santa Claus and the pregnant nun clinked beer glasses together and toasted the scuba diver behind the bar, who was pouring shots of rum for a gnome in a clown suit and a war protestor who had just time-warped in from the Sixties.

No, they were not shooting a remake of a Fellini film; it was the February 29 masquerade party at La Piscina in San Pedro. This twelve- by six-meter pool is the creation of Daniel, a Quebec native who has lived here nearly four years and is a full-time resident.

New Swimming Pool San Pedro

Open since July, 2007, the pool was designed for more than swimming. A depth of just over one meter makes it perfect for water volleyball.

Close-up volcano views from the pool area and the rooftop terrace (which actually has railings) make La Piscina a relaxing place for sipping a pina colada or beer, even if you never hit the water. In addition to the pool, you will find one of the longest bars in town. On weekends they serve pizza and other snacks.

Lush Landscaping

Long chairs are great for sunbathing. Umbrella-shaded tables and hammocks are scattered around the pool and bar. The landscaping, embellished by flowers, banana trees and a deep green grass lawn on the far side, gives one the sense of being at an oasis. Giant fichus trees loom over a badminton court in the back area, where there is space for camping (bathrooms and showers are close by).

In less than a year, the pool has become a regular haunt for locals as well as a new attraction for visitors. It is also the scene of birthday parties and other events, as the entire facility can be rented for special occasions.

The next big event will take place in April. Daniel is hosting a Sunday Brunch with a luxuriant buffet consisting of crepes, mimosas and other uncommon appetizers and entrees.

La Piscina is on the left side of the street on the way to the Santiago dock. Open from 10 AM-5 PM, it is closed on Mondays. Entrance is free, with a Q15 fee for using the pool and showers. Watch for coupons in the print edition of Atitlan Sol and flyers on the street good for a free drink.
